Two men lock eyes from across the battlefield. Tradition dictates that they call forth their pokemon. The battlefield’s already crowded. There’s a more interesting way to do this…[break][break]
Sheriff Navidson’s hand slips to his belt. Instead of gripping a pokeball, he pulls out a knife. He’s been practicing for this. The last time he met Rocket’s blonde underboss, the man ran a knife through Hattori’s eye. While his greninja has been laboring on with one eye, he still wants revenge.[break][break]
“Know you don’t talk much but humor me, Quinn. Gotta admit it’s way more novel this way.” And, from a certain point of view, a fool’s errand. Even wearing a sygna suit, an avatar’s going to have better reaction time. Better senses. He’s stronger.[break][break]
It’s the same principle as before. Every moment this monster’s focused on him, someone else gets a reprieve. There’s victory there. Pacing around the soft sand, he waits for Cillian Quinn to make his move. Lurking unseen, Hattori waits for what he sees as the inevitable ‘no’.[break][break]
As the gym leader so often tells young challengers, Rocket doesn’t play fair.

Cillian's eyes lock upon the familiar figure.[break][break]

Last time, it hadn't been personal. Navy had simply been in the way. Now, with the hindsight that he'd been an intentional distraction to help the likes of Elinor Anderson escape, hatred floods through the underboss.[break][break]

He'd been criticized for not being there when Rocket needed him most. For not arriving quick enough when called. He had not been punished, but the verbal lashing stung enough. Now it was personal.[break][break]

SHADOW MIASMA swirls around him, sharpening his reflexes and quickening his steps. He's got a pokeball in hand before Navy's had the chance to draw the knife, but the words see him hesitate in throwing it. His golden gaze narrows, its sunlight eclipsed in shadow.[break][break]

"That eager to die, Sheriff?"[break][break]

The pokeball is swapped for a weapon forged by Aurelie Lefevre, a combat knife with a deadly black blade.[break][break]

"Let's dance, then."[break][break]

In a swirl of shadow, he lunges.

When the underboss lunges, garbed in shadow, the sheriff thinks of Thomas Benoit . He remembers the gulf Thomas believes there to be between one who is blessed by a god and one who is not. That conversation haunts him. He preaches the opposite – that you can stand up to a god’s chosen with determination and grit.[break][break]
One lunge makes him doubt that. One lunge fills his heart with fear. His own senses are sharper owing to the mingled nature of his soul. A black dragon guides his hand. His knife is less a manmade tool and more a claw as he pivots and skirts the black metal with his own white steel. Sparks fly. His heart races.[break][break]
His fear keeps him alive. Spinning around, he arcs a wide slash aimed across the underboss’s chest.[break][break]
“I’m too damn pretty to die.” He smiles despite the fear. Don’t show anyone how fast your heart’s beating. Bluff them all, convince them there’s nothing terrifying about the tightrope you walk across. Skirt the edge. Cut a path. Prove Thomas wrong.[break][break]

Navy's steel reminds Cillian of a different time, a different place, a memory of a crown and crystal claws. He shoves it away with the same determination that Navy shelves his fear. He is not fighting for Galar.[break][break]

He is fighting for Rocket, and he is going to win.[break][break]

Steel cuts toward his chest, and Cillian slips back with practiced grace.[break][break]

His heart, too, is racing. But Cillian is not afraid. It shows in the gleam of his golden eyes — he is enthralled. Adrenaline surges through him, urged on by the corruption of Lugia's blessing and the toxin that shaped its form.[break][break]

He is never so alive as when he's risking that life for the glory of Team Rocket.[break][break]

"You'll make a pretty corpse," he quips back, twisting the knife in his grip and aiming a brutal uppercut toward the man's abdomen.

In his eyes is every fear he has ever had concerning these legends. Men are not gods. Men are simply men. Weak little things with pretensions far beyond their designs. Cillian is something more. His eyes are alive with power. They dance with the same light he’s seen in a thousand drug addicts in the throes of their addiction.[break][break]
Man is not meant to look that way. He prays the fear doesn’t show on his face. His reflexes urge him to pull back. Just a step or two, that’s all. Just a step and he can skirt around, strike out.[break][break]
First blood goes to the underboss. It’s not a telling blow, nor does it spill Navy’s guts out across the beach. It’s glancing. Were it not for the mockery of avatarship granted by this suit, he would be dead. Instead, a thin red line of blood oozes from where his suit has been cut.[break][break]
“Maybe in a few years.” He teases through the pain. How he can project an aura of confidence, he doesn’t know. Maybe he simply doesn’t want to give this monster the satisfaction of knowing he’s frightened.[break][break]
Moving forward, he moves to push the knife-arm aside. There’s going to be pain. It opens that arm up to being attacked – the same arm that will never be what it once was after their last battle. All he needs to do is make him focus on that arm for a few seconds. Just long enough to jab a knife right into the monster’s black heart.

Changed though he was by Lugia's blessing, her corruption, the heart that beats in Cillian's chest is still human. His flesh is as thin as any man's, a cage of muscle and bone the only thing protecting that heart from fatal injury.[break][break]

So, eager as he was to indulge in this deadly dance, he is still careful.[break][break]

Careful enough to study Navidson's intent even as he strikes a blow toward the arm that knocks his own aside. Careful enough to abort that attack as he witnesses a shift in the other man's posture.[break][break]

He has no Sygna Suit for protection. Not here. As he dances back from the blade driven toward his chest, the knife cuts through a thin barrier of clothing and nicks the flesh along his ribs. Not the killing blow that Navy had hoped for, but a blossom of red against the white of the underbosses shirt.[break][break]

"Nice try," he growls, grinning.[break][break]

He aims a cheap blow to the shin with his foot, looking to knock Navy off-balance.

He wishes there was joy at drawing blood. The sight isn’t anywhere near as sweet as it should be. Instead, the sight of the man’s lifeblood makes him feel guilt. Guilt that threatens to overwhelm him.[break][break]
Monster though this man may be, there is still someone who loves him. He imagines Tempest Quinn in the position he had been in after Sootopolis was taken over. He imagines a trembling hand having to pull back a cloth over a body and see a corpse wearing the face of one that he loves.[break][break]
He’s too soft for this – lost in his own thoughts. The cheap blow throws him off balance, but he goes down kicking and swinging. His other leg, the one that wasn’t attacked, strikes up like a coiled viper. A wild swing of the knife accompanies it, the edge hissing through the air.[break][break]
“More where that came from.” The falling man insists.

Navy kicks back, pain flashing as stars behind Cillian's eyes as he steps back from the falling sheriff. He knows better than to stay within range of reaching limbs that might drag him to the ground in turn; he narrowly shifts from another slash of the knife.[break][break]

THEO BECKETT's training races through his thoughts, all the different ways he might jump on the man to bring an end to this. But his defeat within the Rift keeps him cautious, a paranoia to combat his usual confidence.[break][break]

Instead, he takes the opportunity to orient himself, adjust to the smarting pain. One wrong step could kill him.[break][break]

The same was true of his opponent.[break][break]

Seeking out the slightest opening, he'd lunge if Navy pushed to his feet.[break][break]

No guilt plagues the Harbinger; only an echoing thought. Don't disappoint me.

Navy claws out like a wounded animal, and Cillian shifts back from the blow with heart pounding and blood roaring in his ears.[break][break]

"Run, then," Cillian sneers. "It's the only way you're making it out of this."[break][break]

For all his outward bravado, there is a thin sliver of fear in the back of Cillian's mind. His confidence had been shaken in the Rift, and he thinks now of how devastated Tempest Quinn and Lulu Flint would be if he perished here to this fool's game.[break][break]

Unfortunately, just like Navy, Cil is proud.[break][break]

He will not back down.[break][break]

So he leans into the adrenaline that buoys him and the dopamine that floods his system and circles his opponent, a predator searching for an opening.

Swiping his blade, blow by blow, he slows down. As he shifts, trying to stand to his feet, he understands now this is a losing proposition.[break][break]
Maybe he could pull out a pokeball. Maybe, together, he could escape. He could go back to the League, lick his wounds, and tell them he did his best. That’s all anyone ever tells them. They tried. This war stagnated long before he could join the frontlines.[break][break]
And you won’t be the one to end it, Michael. His father’s ghost whispers. A pussy like you? You’ll never amount to anything.[break][break]
“And I sure as shit…ain’t gonna back down from you.” He speaks to a taller man, who wears such a confident mask. Another lunge, another relentless offensive attack. He shirks defense in favor of offense. An all or nothing gambit, accepting he’ll be stabbed in return.[break][break]

Instead of slowly draining himself, he resolves to lunge. One last all out thrust. Too slow, but it’s better than nothing. It’d be the easiest thing in the world to push past, slide a knife right into the sheriff’s heart.

The lunge, sudden as it is, manages to catch even the miasma-blessed Harbinger off-guard. He's a split-second too late to dodge it entirely, managing instead to turn it into a glancing blow that, while not fatal, stings like a bitch.[break][break]

But he barely feels it, for a shot of adrenaline floods fresh through his veins as he spies, at last, his opening.[break][break]

Navy will never know if Cillian might've granted him mercy.[break][break]

Instead, he'll know the cold kiss of a blade as it slams into his chest, the force behind the strike suggesting the hidden truth of the Harbinger's desperation. Though he concealed it well behind his mask, Cillian was a man like any other.[break][break]
